Before an engine will start, it must first be cranked. Turning the engine over draws air and fuel into the cylinders and compresses the mixture so it can be ignited to provide power. Cranking the engine also generates the ignition and crankshaft position sensor signals that are needed to fire the spark plugs and operate the fuel injectors. So if a starter fails to crank the engine or turns too slowly, the engine will not start. And a no-start means you either walk or bum rides until the problem is fixed (unless, of course, you're a real plugger who drives a vehicle with a stick shift and enjoys...

by Larry Carley Do you need a new starter because your engine won't crank? Many starters are replaced unnecessarily and are later returned back to the parts store because they are thought to be defective. When tested, there's no fault found. The real problem is misdiagnosis. Professional technicians will usually make the correct diagnosis, but many DIYers are simply making a semi-educated guess - and they sometimes guess wrong. Fig 1. Starter and Alternator One of the best ways to find out if your starter is bad is to have it "bench tested" at a parts store. If it cranks at norm...

by Vlad Samarin I receive many questions on vehicle no-start problems. In this page I have tried to write down some simple tips that may help you to find out why your car won't start. These tips may also prevent you from being overcharged by dishonest mechanics - you will often be charged more at a garage if you look unfamiliar with the car mechanical aspects. What is needed for an engine to startFirst, let's see what normally takes to start a gasoline car engine:1. The engine must be turned over by the starter motor with enough speed to catch. For this to happen, the battery must have enough ...

Starter MotorA starter is an electric motor that turns over the engine to start it. A starter consists of the very powerful DC electric motor and starter solenoid that is attached to the motor (see Figure1). Figure1 Starter Motor A starter motor requires very high current to crank the engine, that's why it's connected to the battery with large cables (see Figure 2). Figure 2 Simplified diagram of typical starting system The negative (ground) cable connects the "-" battery terminal to the engine block...

Starting SystemsPurpose of the Starting SystemThe purpose of the starting system is to convert chemical energy stored in the battery into electrical energy, then into mechanical energy in the starter motor. This mechanical energy is then transferred through gears and drives from the starter motor to the engine flywheel. After the transfer and conversion of all this energy the engine flywheel begins to rotate. The rotation must be of sufficient speed to allow the engine to form the combustible air-fuel mixture required for starting. It must be maintained during initial combustion long enough unt...
